Compact electric SUV is expected to cost around £24,000.

Volkswagen has unveiled its latest electric car – the ID.Cross.

Arriving as a compact electric SUV, the new ID.Cross is effectively a battery-powered version of the brand’s T-Cross model.

With two battery options – 37kWh and 52kWh – the ID.Cross comes with a claimed range of up to 265 miles while rapid charging will enable a 10 to 80 per cent charge in around 23 minutes.

The ID.Cross will also be available with three power outputs, with 114, 133 and 208bhp power stages to choose from.

The ID.Cross follows on from the ID.Polo and ID.Polo GTI and exhibits a similar design on the outside to both of those cars. There’s a full-width front light bar with a prominent Volkswagen badge, and there are large, chunky wheelarch surrounds for a more go-anywhere appearance.

Inside, there’s a 10.25-inch digital display which can be used to show a retro display similar to that in the original Volkswagen Golf. In this mode, there’s a classic speedometer on the left and a tachometer on the right. However, at the click of a button, this can be changed to show more information.

In the middle of the dashboard sits a 12.9-inch infotainment system which incorporates all key media and navigation functions as standard.

As standard, the ID.Cross comes with a 475-litre boot with a variable floor, while an extra 25-litre ‘frunk’ provides additional space for the car’s charging cables. That boot space is also 20 litres larger than the standard petrol T-Cross.

The new ID.Cross has gone on sale in Germany, priced from €28,000, or around £23,800 if converted directly. Full UK pricing and specifications are expected to be announced soon.
