Angus Robertson: Scotland has ‘much to learn’ from Spain over depopulation

Scotland has “much to learn” from Spain on how to deal with the problem of depopulation, External Relations Secretary Angus Robertson said as he began an official visit to Madrid.
Mr Robertson is due to meet Spanish ministers as well as leading figures from the culture and tourism sectors in Spain over the next two days.
Meetings will look at potential trade and investment opportunities, including in the energy sector, as well as possible future cultural collaborations.

Speaking at the start of the trip, the External Affairs Secretary said: “Scotland enjoys a longstanding history and friendship with Spain, particularly through our shared passion for culture and art.
“Next year, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra will perform at the Festival Internacional de musica de Canarias, while several National Galleries of Scotland exhibitions will go on show in Madrid.”
He added that both Scotland and Spain “face the huge challenge of shaping innovative and sustainable solutions to the complex issue of depopulation” adding that on this “Scotland has much to learn from Spain”.
Mr Robertson continued: “With many countries across the world concerned about rising energy prices and the cost-of-living crisis, the green hydrogen links between our countries also offer significant scope for investment.
“I’m looking forward to sharing our experiences and knowledge on these issues with the Spanish Government and to building on the strong relationship with one of our most important European trading partners.”
