McLaren reveals name of its World Endurance Championship racer with the ‘MCL-HY’

McLaren is returning to the FIA World Endurance Championships with its latest hypercar, the MCL-HY.
The MCL-HY will compete in the ‘LMP1’ category of the WEC, which are vehicles designed especially for endurance racing and all have closed cockpits.

There are no details on the car’s exterior or interior design, though the image that has been released shows the vehicle will have an active front splitter with aero ducts in its front bumpers and signature LED headlights with pixel daytime running lights.
McLaren will also introduce a track car variant called the ‘MCL-HY GTR’ alongside a track day programme called ‘Project: Endurance.’
Project: Endurance will allow a small selection of clients to own and experience a MCL-HY GTR and will be invited to gain exclusive access into the development of the McLaren’s Hypercar Team’s new racer.
Henrik Wilhelmsmeyer, chief commercial officer at McLaren Automotive, said: “The MCL-HY GTR proudly continues a lineage that began with the McLaren F1 GTR’s outright Le Mans victory in 1995 and then continued with the McLaren P1 GTR and McLaren Senna GTR track cars. With the MCL-HY GTR, we are writing the next chapter for our most focused, authentic and uncompromising track cars.”
McLaren will reveal the MCL-HY WEC racer and track car variant on May 4, with more details on their specifications to be announced in due course.
