Passengers evacuated near Tay Bridge amid fire on train

Passengers were evacuated amid a fire on a train near the Tay Bridge.

Three fire engines went to the scene in Dundee when the alarm was raised at 10.40am on Friday.

ScotRail services were disrupted following the incident, which involved the 9.30am Edinburgh Waverley to Aberdeen service.

The company said firefighters quickly extinguished a small fire which was in one of the train’s two locomotives.

Around 70 people – customers and staff – were on board the train and there were no reports of any injuries.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 10.44am on Friday to reports of a fire affecting a train carriage on Dundee railway bridge.

“Operations control mobilised three appliances and other resources to the area to assist emergency service partners at the scene.

“Crews left the scene at 12.24pm after ensuring the area was made safe.”

It is understood passengers were moved to the rear carriage of the train and then evacuated.

ScotRail said the incident will now be investigated to establish what caused it.

Mark Ilderton, ScotRail service delivery director, said: “We are assisting the emergency services following an incident involving a ScotRail train near Dundee.

“While services between Glasgow Queen Street and Aberdeen are on the move again, services between Edinburgh and Aberdeen remain suspended.”
