Renault has unveiled a new concept version of its 4 electric SUV designed for beach expeditions.

Called the Renault 4 JP4X4, it’s a concept billed as a ‘modern beach car’ by the French firm, incorporating a variety of touches designed to make it as useful as possible for days by the sea.

With ‘openwork’ doors and roof, the JP4X4 gives as much of an open-air experience as possible but, unlike Renault’s production Plein Sud car, doesn’t have a soft top. Finished in an ‘Emerald Green’ exterior colour with a contrasting orange interior, the JP4X4’s colourways hark back to those used on the classic ‘4L’ of the 1970s and 80s.placeholder image

Inside, the seats get integrated headrests while the door panels, boot surround and dashboard have a textured finish to them. There’s even a grab handle on the passenger’s side of the dashboard for when the ride gets a little more adventurous.

The JP4X4 gets a 15mm boost in ground clearance over the standard Renault 4, and while the 18-inch wheels are the same as the ones on the production car, they’re equipped with chunky Goodyear UltraGrip Performance tyres to help boost traction.placeholder image

However, one of the biggest differences between this concept and the standard car is the fitment of an additional electric motor at the rear axle. With this, the JP4X4 gets four-wheel drive and a helpful increase in off-road capability.

Shown at this Roland-Garros French Open, the Renault 4 JP4X4 is one of several new concepts from the French manufacturer to have been released over the last year. However, there are currently no plans to put it into production.
