A wonderful opening night was held on Monday night with Fergal Browne telling the history of the Brownshill Dolmen, and it’s deep rooted meaning for the people of Carlow.
Inside the small, but beautifully lit gallery you’ll find an array of stunning and unique pieces ranging from photography, painting, sculpture, prints, stories, jewellery and video. Nuala Grogan, Richard Smyth, Cepta Burke and Fergal Browne formed the perfect team in assembling the impressive collection.
Older than Newgrange, Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Egypt, the Brownshill Dolmen is the proud owner of the largest Capstone in Europe, weighing in at an estimated 150 metric tons! It rests on the former estate house of the Browne family from which it takes its name on the Hacketstown Road.
A dolmen or portal tomb is a type of single-chamber megalithic tomb, usually consisting of two or more upright megaliths supporting a large flat horizontal capstone or "table". The tomb was built between 4000 and 3000 BC. The capstone is thought to have been covered by an earthen mound and a gate stone blocked the entrance. This earthen mound has weathered away, exposing its stone "skeleton".
At Brownshill both portal stones and the gate-stone are still in situ; the capstone lies on top of the portals and gate-stone and slopes to the ground away from the entrance.
Local Artist & Filmmaker, Heather Grogan said: "It’s really wonderful to see so many talented people coming together to celebrate both their art and their heritage. Fair play to the organisers! I was delighted to have my piece accepted and to be included in this fantastic event. Carlow has some seriously talented artists and it’s a thrill to see their work embraced and appreciated like this".
Why not pop in this week during the Pan Celtic Festival and experience this amazing exhibition for yourselves!
