Student Chloe Cody from Carlow receives scholarship at Women in STEM Awards

Chloe Cody from Bagenalstown, Carlow was amongst sixty-two students across Ireland to receive a scholarship as part of Johnson & Johnson's Women in STEM2D Undergraduate Awards Programme at an event held in Thomond Park, Limerick.

The programme looks to encourage more women to take up careers in STEM industries, addressing the underrepresentation of women in the field. Research published by the Higher Education Authority earlier this year identified that 35% of students in STEM-related courses at third level are female.

The sixty-two students who received scholarships as part of the programme study in one of the five following universities: Trinity College Dublin, University of Limerick, University College Cork, University of Galway and Munster Technology University have received scholarships as part of the programme.

Carlow's Chloe is studying Chemistry with Forensic Science at University College Cork.

Each recipient of the award gains access to industry mentorship, leadership training, career workshops, Johnson & Johnson site visits, and participation in WiSTEM2D events. Winners were also presented with bespoke framed glass artwork crafted by Fermoy-based artist Suzanne O'Sullivan.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD, said commented on the success of the students "Huge congratulations to the recipients of the Johnson & Johnson WiSTEM2D Award on their achievements. What they have achieved to date is inspirational and I hope will encourage more women to study STEM."
