Apple Trees planted in Sacred Heart Hospital Carlow to mark Earth Day

Two apple trees have been planted in the garden of the Sacred Heart Hospital in Carlow, marking the occurrence of “Earth Day” this week.

Residents and staff at the Sacred Heart were delighted to be joined at a ceremony to mark the occasion by the Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council Cllr. Andrea Dalton.

The trees were donated by Colm O’ Brien in memory of his mother Kathleen and by Topline Doyle’s. They were planted, respectively, by residents Ann Ryan (and her husband Tom Ryan) and Jim MacAssey.

Welcoming everyone to Sacred Heart on the day, Jenny Dowling (Director of Nursing) said:

“We are delighted to have guests with us for Earth Day, including family of our residents for a ceremony that was followed by some refreshments in our day room. It’s a chance for all of us to celebrate our planet, to raise awareness about environmental conservation and to encourage action for a healthier and more sustainable future.”

Speaking at the ceremony, Activities Co-ordinator in the Sacred Heart Deirdre Hilliard said:

“Sacred Heart Hospital is a 63-bed residential care centre facility, with accommodation arranged in three interconnecting units (the Sacred Heart, St. Clare's and St. James’s units). Their garden is an important feature of life for residents at the Sacred Heart, as is our ongoing activities programme. We were looking forward to this occasion and extend our thanks to those who donated the trees and who came along to share Earth Day with us here. It’s very much in the spirit of the Earth Day message, in that together we can make a meaningful impact and create a more sustainable world.”
