Local Carlow Fianna Fáil TD Jennifer Murnane O'Connor TD has described the publication of the Mental Health Bill 2024 as an important milestone.
Government ministers gave approval today (Wednesday, 24 July 2024) to publish the Bill.
The Mental Health Bill will replace the existing Mental Health Acts 2001 – 2022 and is primarily based on the General Scheme of a Bill to amend the Mental Health Act, 2001, published by the Government in July 2021.
Deputy Murnane O'Connor said: "I'm delighted that my party colleagues Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly TD and Minister for Mental Health and Older People, Mary Butler TD, brought this legislation to Cabinet and it was approved.
"Its publication is a hugely important milestone. The Bill contains 197 sections, including regulation of all community Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).
"It also provides a modern legal framework that will protect the rights of people with mental health difficulties in the decades ahead."
"Any measure that makes our laws more person-centric must be welcomed."
