Local Carlow Fianna Fáil TD, Jennifer Murnane O'Connor has warmly welcomed Cabinet approval of a landmark water supply project that will secure a sustainable water supply for up to half of Ireland's population over the next 30 years and beyond.
It will see critical infrastructure upgrades across the eastern and midlands regions, creating a treated water spine that extends from Tipperary to Dublin and Carlow to Drogheda.
The project, which marks the beginning of a multi-billion euro investment, will be instrumental in addressing the region's growing water demands, supporting the development of new homes, and encouraging further investment in the area. The upgrades will also play a crucial role in meeting the challenges of climate change by diversifying and securing resilient water services for communities across these regions.
Deputy Murnane O'Connor said, “The Cabinet’s approval paves the way for Úisce Éireann to move forward with the remaining Infrastructure Guidelines approval gates, including the submission of a planning application to An Bord Pleanála in 2025. This project is not just about ensuring a sustainable water supply—it's about future-proofing our communities, supporting housing delivery, and fostering economic growth.
"As we face increasing challenges from climate change, it is more important than ever to have a diversified and secure water supply. This will provide the necessary infrastructure to support our communities and ensure they have access to safe and reliable water for decades to come.”
