Carlow Town sparkled with festive cheer on Saturday as over 3,100 people braved the weather to attend Lightfest 2024, a dazzling celebration that marked the beginning of the festive season.

Hosted by Carlow County Council, families gathered on Saturday night to enjoy a rich program of live entertainment, festive treats, and community spirit, culminating in the arrival of Santa Claus and the illumination of Carlow’s Christmas lights with beautiful fireworks display on the River.
Speaking at the event, which marks the start of Christmas in Carlow, Mayor Fintan Phelan said: "Lightfest 2024 truly showcased the very best of Carlow and the incredible sense of community spirit that defines our town. Despite the weather, families turned out in their thousands to celebrate the magic of the festive season together, and it was a joy to see so many smiling faces lighting up the evening."

Mayor Phelan thanked the Carlow Area Office team and local supplier, Seamus Byrne Electrical, for their hard work and dedication in putting the festive lights in place.
"Their efforts have transformed Carlow into a winter wonderland that everyone can enjoy. As we look ahead to the holiday season, I also encourage everyone to shop local and support the wonderful businesses that make Carlow so special. Together, we can ensure this festive season is not only magical but also meaningful for our community,” he said.
The festivities began at 3.40pm with a variety of lively and festive performances continuing until just after 6pm when Santa Claus made his highly anticipated arrival, greeted by thunderous applause.
Joined by a host of local dignitaries, they lit up Carlow’s festive decorations, marking the official start of the holiday season.
As the lights twinkled across the town, the sky was set ablaze with a breath-taking fireworks display, leaving attendees in awe and creating unforgettable memories.
Ahead of the event, Santa spread some joy across Carlow, Tullow, and Bagenalstown, meeting children at the new festive post boxes built by Tullow Men’s Shed.
Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council, Cllr. Fergal Browne, says Lightfest 2024 was a fantastic occasion.
"This event highlights the strong sense of unity and festive spirit that makes Carlow so unique. It was an absolute privilege to be part of such a memorable occasion that brought joy to so many families. Events like Lightfest are more than just celebrations—they are opportunities to bring people together, foster community spirit, and create lasting memories, especially during the festive season.
"Carlow County Council is proud to host a significant programme of activities over the Christmas period, including engaging library events, public celebrations, and more. These events are designed to ensure that there is something for everyone, from young children to the young at heart. I encourage everyone to take part in these wonderful activities and experience the magic of the season across the county."
