Several busy walkways and footpaths in a town in Carlow have closed from today as major sewerage network improvement works get underway in Tullow.

Carlow County Council confirmed that a number of routes along the Slaney riverside are now shut to the public, including "the Slaney river-side footpath from Tullow Bridge towards Tesco,” "the wooden footbridge itself," and "the footpath and stairs to the rear of Tesco leading to its front door."

The closures, which began at 7.30am this morning (Monday, November 3), will remain in place until Friday, December 12, "subject to weather and progress," according to the council.

In a statement, Carlow County Council's Tullow Municipal District said the temporary measures are necessary "to facilitate Uisce Éireann and their contractors while they continue with sewerage network improvement works in Tullow."

The council confirmed that pedestrian access to Tesco will still be possible, though via a detour. "Pedestrian access to Tesco from the yet-to-be-properly-named 'Inner Relief Road' shall still be available via the alternative route of Bridge Street, Abbey Street and the Bunclody Road," the statement added.

Carlow County Council and Uisce Éireann apologised for any disruption caused, saying they "shall endeavour to re-open these footpaths as soon as it is safe for all to do so."

The works are part of a wider programme to improve Tullow's sewerage and wastewater network.
