Uisce Éireann has completed a project which has seen the replacement of 2.1km of old and damaged cast iron pipes in Tullow, Co. Carlow.

This will lead to a reduction in water loss, enhanced pressure, and a more resilient supply for local homes and businesses.

The programme which replaced the water mains in Tullow Town Centre commenced in February 2025.

These works were being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.

The works took place along Church Street, Bridge Street, Market Square, Mill Street, Bishop Street, Old Chapel Lane, John Street, The Course/ Crosskeys, and Mullawn.

The works also involved laying new connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply.

"For too long, residents and business owners have had to contend with the frustrations of an aging water infrastructure. The completion of these extensive upgrades marks a turning point," Deputy John McGuinness said following the announcement that the project had been completed earlier this week.

He highlighted that a reliable and modern water network is the bedrock of a thriving community.

"This is more than just pipes in the ground. It’s about securing the basic services that allow our towns like Tullow to function and prosper. A reliable water supply is fundamental for attracting new businesses, supporting existing enterprises like the long-standing Murphy’s Butchers, and facilitating the delivery of new homes for families," Deputy McGuinness said.
