New speed limits confirmed for key Carlow roads from this week

Changes to the N80 and N81 will see lower limits introduced in rural sections

New speed limits confirmed for key Carlow roads from this week

New speed limits are set to come into effect on two of Carlow’s main national routes this week, with motorists urged to take note ahead of the change.

Carlow County Council has confirmed that a special speed limit of 80km/h will be introduced on rural sections of the N80 and N81 within the county from Thursday, December 18, 2025.

The new limits apply to mechanically propelled vehicles travelling on the national secondary roads and form part of a wider review of speed limits across the county.

According to the local authority, the changes follow consultation with An Garda Síochána and Transport Infrastructure Ireland, alongside a period of public consultation earlier this year.

Carlow County Council said it exercised its powers under Section 9 of the Road Traffic Act 2004 to review existing Special Speed Limit Bye Laws applying to certain roads in the county, including the N80 and N81.

Draft bye laws for the new limits were advertised and considered before being brought before elected members in November.

The council confirmed that the new County Carlow Road Traffic National Secondary Road N80 and N81 Speed Limit Bye Laws 2025 were formally passed by resolution at the council meeting on November 10, clearing the way for them to come into force this week.

Motorists are being advised to familiarise themselves with the updated limits and watch for signage on affected sections of the roads once the changes take effect.

The council said the updated limits are designed to reflect road conditions in rural areas and to support road safety across the county.
