Will it snow in Carlow? Latest Met Éireann weather warning for cold snap

A Status Yellow low temperature and ice warning covering Carlow has been extended until Tuesday morning with Met Éireann still warning of very cold conditions in the coming days.

They say Monday night will be "cold and dry with clear spells for most, though wintry showers will become more widespread in the north for a time early on." It is highly unlikely to snow in Carlow in the coming days but further unsettled and windy weather is likely to impact the county later this week.

Their Status Yellow low temperature/ice warning for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Munster, Galway and Roscommon will see "temperatures falling to between -1 and -3 degrees generally. Sharp frost and icy stretches. Black ice too."

This will result in treacherous travel conditions in Carlow and elsewhere.

The Met Éireann forecast for the week continues:

"Widespread frost and icy stretches will form early on along with patches of mist and fog [Monday night]. Cloud will build from the west overnight, raising temperatures slightly, and outbreaks of rain or sleet will reach Atlantic coastal areas by morning. Lowest temperatures of -3 to +2 degrees, with light to moderate westerly winds backing southwesterly by morning.

"Cold and dry to start in the eastern half of the country [Tuesday], with frost and icy patches. Outbreaks of rain and drizzle in the west will move eastwards through the morning and early afternoon, becoming patchier as they do. Sunny spells and scattered showers will follow. Highest temperatures of 3 to 8 degrees, coldest in the east, with mostly moderate southwesterly winds veering northwesterly in the evening.

"Any showers along Atlantic coasts will ease early on leaving dry conditions with clear spells. Cloud will build from the west later in the night. Lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees with light to moderate northwesterly winds.

"Patchy rain and drizzle will spread across the country from the west [on Wednesday], possibly turning to sleet over higher ground. Staying cold in the east and northeast with highest temperatures of 3 to 5 degrees, but milder in the west and south with highest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees, all in light to moderate southerly winds.

"Rain will clear eastwards early on with clear spells and isolated showers following. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees with light to moderate westerly winds.

"There is uncertainty in the details [for Thursday] but rain is likely to spread over the southern half of the country with scattered showers further north. Highest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees with mostly light westerly or variable winds.

"Likely a mix of sunny spells and showers [on Friday], mainly affecting Atlantic coastal counties. Highest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees, with light to moderate northwesterly winds."

Beyond that and into the weekend, Met Éireann says: "Current indications show unsettled conditions for the weekend with a signal for some wet and blustery weather."
