A 5km run in memory of a former soldier from Carlow will take place this weekend on Sunday, February 1st.

The Mark Mahon memorial run started in 2022, after Mark passed away the previous year.

The 26-year-old was discovered unresponsive in St Stephen's Military Barracks in Kilkenny and was transferred to St Luke's Hospital, where he sadly passed away.

The 5K run will take place to honour his memory while also raising funds for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) Ireland.

It begins at 11am on Sunday in Rathwood, Tullow.

This Sunday is the fourth anniversary of Mark's death and his loved ones are asking people to show up to do something Mark loved to do - run.

"This isn’t just a 5K. It’s a day of community, connection and celebration. Whether you’re chasing a PB, walking with friends, or cheering from the sidelines – YOU make this day special," the event's page states.

"Mark ran his first marathon in 2020 and quickly fell in love with running. Each year, we honour him with this special 5K. Knowing he often ran this very route makes the day even more meaningful. Last year’s support blew us away – and we’d love to see even more of you this year," the page continues.

Registration is from 9:30am to 10:30am and the first 300 people to register will get a bespoke medal.

Embroidered beanies are a new addition to this year's run and will be available in five different colours.

The first three people to cross the finish line will receive a Defence Forces trophy.
