RIP: Carlow mourning 'a massive loss' as former prison officer passes away

Rest in peace John O' Brien

Tributes have poured in following the death of a retired prison officer from Carlow Town who will be missed greatly by many people.

John O'Brien was a prison offer at Portlaoise Prison and was from 38 Avondale Drive, Hanover, Carlow and Lanzarote, Spain, .

John passed away unexpectedly but peacefully surrounded by his loving family, on March 14th, 2026 at Portlaoise Regional Hospital, Co Laois.

Predeceased by his nephew David

Beloved father of Kate and Sean, much loved brother of Lorraine, Eddie, Alan and the late Martin, treasured partner of Linda and cherished son of the late Teresa and Murt.

Remembered by his children Kate and Sean, son-in-law Damien, partner Linda, brothers, sister, sisters-in-law Marie and Charlene, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, extended family, relatives and friends.

John will repose at Carpenter Bros Funeral Home, Shamrock Sq (R93 C863) on Wednesday March 18th from 4pm concluding with Prayers at 7pm that evening. Removal from there on Thursday morning at 11.45am to The Cathedral of the Assumption, Carlow arriving for Funeral Mass at 12 Noon. Burial afterwards in St Mary’s Cemetery, Carlow

Family flowers only please, Donations, if desired, To The Poor Clare Sisters, Graiguecullen

Heartfelt messages have been left on RIP.ie, from those who knew and cared for John, with one mourner writing,

"I was very sorry to hear of Johns passing. He was a lovely fella and a pleasure to work with. My condolences to all who will miss him".

Another message said, "I'll miss ya johnny, we had some seriously funny times together that I will remember forever. You were some craic and ill always rem the laughs we had. Rest easy pal".

"Its hard to put into words what to say. Very Sad news and a massive loss to the O Brien family. Had the pleasure of working with John for over 20 years...a good guy...Rest in Peace," another person said.
