A soccer club in County Carlow has been given a major boost after it was granted planning permission for the erection of floodlights.

Parkville United AFC has been granted permission to erect six floodlights to the perimeter of their existing soccer pitch.

The floodlights will each be approximately 15 metres in height and will facilitate the playing of night time games. Each of the columns will be fitted with three lights.

A number of associated site works will also be undertaken at the club grounds, which are located at Hawkins Lane, Tullow.

Parkville United say that the floodlights will be used from the months of September to May, as dictated by Carlow League fixtures.

The lights will primarily be used on Friday and Saturday evenings, from approximately 6pm to 10pm.

However, the lights will also be used for occasional midweek games, during similar evening hours.

The club said the lights will be used less frequently during the months of September, March, April and May due to longer daylight hours.

In a request for further information, Carlow County Council expressed concern over a “possible light overspill” to adjoining residential properties in Saint Austin's Terrace.

However, it is understood that these concerns were addressed in further documents submitted by the club.

No third party submissions were made in relation to the development.

The planning application was submitted by Secretary Shay Kirwan on behalf of the club on December 23.

Carlow County Council granted permission for the development on March 26, with eight conditions attached.
