Views sought as work on Kilkee Flood Relief Scheme progresses

While the current study includes a large geographical area, the focus of the scheme is Kilkee town centre and surrounding housing and commercial estates

A public consultation process is underway as work continues to finalise the long-awaited Kilkee Flood Relief Scheme.

A draft set of planning drawings and reports have gone on public display in the Sweeney Memorial Library as part of the consultation which continues until next Wednesday, March 6. The documents are also available to view on the project website.

Clare County Council, which is leading the project, is urging all stakeholders and members of the public to engage with the process and to make submissions and observations where appropriate.

Representatives of the local authority and the Office of Public Works will be present at the Sweeney Memorial Library, between 2pm and 5pm on March 6, to meet with interested parties.

While the current study includes a large geographical area, the focus of the scheme is the town centre and surrounding housing and commercial estates which either flooded in 2017, or are predicted to flood in an extreme event.

Clare County Council, along with project partners the OPW, have appointed JBA/JB Barry Consulting Engineers, to review and develop the Shannon CFRAM study (2012) and design an appropriate viable, cost-effective and sustainable flood relief scheme for Kilkee which aims to minimise risk to human beings, the existing community, social amenity, environment and landscape character.

As part of the project, the consultants have produced a 186-page Hydraulic Modelling Report which includes various models, projections and potential solutions.

The document includes details of two fluvial models which were constructed to model the two main watercourses in Kilkee -  the Victoria Stream model and the Atlantic Stream model.
