A number of works to improve accessibility around Newmarket-on-Fergus for people with mobility impairments are set to be completed by the end of this year.
These include an extension of the footpath from new housing development Radharc an Óir to Halpins Garage, provision of public seating in the vicinity of the car park for Our Lady of the Rosary Church, and also to include a disabled car parking space in the vicinity of the church car park.
Senior executive engineer with Shannon Municipal District, Tom Mellett, has stated that his office has commenced design on each of these measures.
"It is our intention to complete the works in the second half of the year, which should lead to the centre of the town becoming more accessible," he said.
Mr Mellett's statement was in reply to a motion brought before the bi-monthly meeting of the Shannon MD on Tuesday, March 19, by councillor Pat McMahon, calling on the MD to improve accessibility in the village.
