An impression as to how the data centre complex will look when complete
Clare County Council has welcomed the decision of An Bord Pleanála to grant permission for a €450 million data centre campus on the outskirts of Ennis.
The local authority approved the proposed development in August 2022 but this decision was appealed by a number of local groups and residents and several organisations - Futureproof Clare, An Taisce and Friends of the Irish Environment.
In a statement, issued this Tuesday evening, Clare County Council says it has received notification from An Bord Pleanála of its decision to reject the appeals and grant planning permission.
Located on a 145 acre site at Toureen, Tulla Road, the new data centre campus will consist of six data centres once complete.
A spokesperson for the local authority says the decision - details of which will be confirmed later this week - represents a "significant milestone" in the development of what is regarded as a strategic site.

The council says the decision also gives effect to the government statement on the Role of Data Centres in Ireland’s Enterprise Strategy and delivers on key objectives of the Clare County Development Plan 2023-2029.
“I welcome the decision of An Bord Pleanála on this important proposal for Ennis, County Clare, and indeed the region. Clare County Council through its Planning Department and Economic Development Directorate have worked over the last 10 years to identify and bring forward a plan-led approach for a development of this scale. This decision gives effect to a strategic objective of the Council to enable the delivery of a data centre of regional and national scale in line with Government objectives," said Pat Dowling, chief executive of Clare County Council.
According to the developers - Art Data Centres Limited - the data centre will generate up to 450 permanent jobs when fully operational, with up to 1,200 in the construction phase along with 600 in support services.
