Professor Kilcommins said it was his “pleasure” to announce the appointment.

He said: “I want to congratulate Ann on her appointment to this key leadership role in the University.

“I will continue as Acting President until such time as the recruitment process and appointment of a President for UL is complete, and I look forward to working with Ann on Executive Committee over the coming year.”

Professor Ledwith said: “It is 45 years since I cycled onto the NIHE campus as a first-year student, and I consider myself to be privileged to have been part of the development of this University. I am hugely honoured to take up the role of Interim Provost and Deputy President.”
