Fianna Fáil spokesperson for Tourism and Aviation and Clare TD, Cathal Crowe, got the surprise of his life this week upon entering his shed one morning to check on the cattle after one of his cows gave birth.
The TD said, "I came into the shed and he was standing on the floor. We have a black Labrador and out of the corner of my eye, I thought it was the Labrador for a second, amongst the cattle, and then I realised it was a calf."
Standing in front of him was a tiny black organic Dexter bull calf, who was even smaller than their family dog, a black Labrador named Sadie.
"I've never seen anything as small as him," said Mr Crowe. "He's only up to knee height. He's tiny, he's very skinny, so he's able to slip in and out of gates and bars and the only thing containing him is the fact that his mother is there. He doesn't want to venture away from her."
The adorable animal comes as a result of his mother, also a Dexter which is an ancient Irish breed, and his father, an Aberdeen Angus.

Speaking on the calf, the Fianna Fáil TD said, "He's lively already. So he's got his tags yesterday and he's now officially part of the herd."

One person commented, "Cathal, as the say, the best of goods in small parcels. He's gorgeous and cute."
Another said, "He's beautiful. Dexter's are all small when born but they soon grow, believe me. I had two calves born on the farm last summer, I never seen calves so small but they thrive. Happy farming, black beauty is a good name.. class wee calf."
While a third stated, "Could be a tourist attraction!"
