Stripe Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition take place at the RDS this week

Students from a number of schools in County Clare hoping to shine during this week's Stripe Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition.

A total of 21 projects from five schools across the Banner County have qualified for this year's event, which is being sponsored by Stripe for the first time.

Almost 2,000 entries were received for the contest which takes place between January 7 and 10 - a total of 550 projects have been shortlisted.

The five schools which will represent Clare on the national stage this week are Mary Immaculate Secondary School (13 projects); Ennistymon Community School (three projects); St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Tulla (three projects); St John Bosco Community College (one project) and Shannon Comprehensive (one project).

Many of the projects which qualified for the exhibition explore factors which shape young people's lives such as social media, vaping and stress associated with the Leaving Certificate.

According to the organisers, the number of entries related to AI and machine-learning has increase by 75% while sustainability and climate change entries have increased by 41%.

"The level of intellect and curiosity displayed in this year's Stripe YSTE project entries has amazed us," said Dr Tony Scott, co-founder of YSTE.

"Narrowing down the 1,974 entries to just 550 qualified projects was no small task," he added.

Judging of the 550 projects will begin this Wednesday with the winners being announced on Friday night.

The Stripe Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition will be open to members of the public on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
