Condemnation as shots fired at house while child was sleeping inside

Social Democratic and Labour Party Leader Colum Eastwood MP has condemned those who shot at a house in the Melmore Gardens area of the city last night.

Mr Eastwood appealed for attacks on the local community to stop.

Foyle MP Mr Eastwood said: “Last night’s shooting at a house in Creggan is yet another dangerous attempt to intimidate and harm people in our community.

“We have heard countless pleas from the people of Creggan for these senseless acts to stop and to take guns off our streets for good. It’s time those responsible listened to them and stop their reckless behaviour.

“Those responsible must stop terrorizing our community immediately. Creggan and Derry don’t want this.”

SDLP Policing Board member, Mark H Durkan MLA condemned the actions of those behind the incident.

The MLA for Foyle said:  “The cowards behind this incident at Melmore Gardens engaged in a reckless endangerment of life.

“It’s disgraceful that the victims of this attack including a child, sleeping in their beds have been targeted in this way. The trauma inflicted on this household will have a lasting impact. My thoughts are with them today.

“There is absolutely no place within our society for violence and absolutely no place for guns on our streets. Attacks like these by faceless, reckless individuals serve no purpose in our community. I would appeal to anyone with information to come forward.”

Sinn Féin Councillor Emma McGinley also condemned Monday night's gun attack in the Melmore Gardens area of Creggan.

She said: “The shooting in Melmore Gardens on Monday night was wrong and I condemn it.

“This was a reckless attack and it’s lucky that no one was injured. There is no place for guns on our streets.

“Anyone with information on this attack should bring it forward to the police.”
