A 17-year-old youth has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court today charged with assaulting and resisting police and breaching his bail.
The youth was charged with assaulting and resisting police on January 9.
He also faced a series of charges relating to an incident on December 26 when he was charged with two assaults aggravated by domestic abuse and 4 counts of assault on police.
A police officer connected the accused to the charges and told the court that police were called to a children's home after a report of an assault on the accused.
The officer said the defendant had 'visible injuries' including a black eye and a lump on his head.
He appeared to be heavily intoxicated and unsteady on his feet and was arrested for breaching his bail.
When police went to arrest him he 'lashed out' and allegedly spat blood at one officer.
The officer said that this was the defendant's seventh or eighth breach but added he was aware of the hurdles that he had to cross to get a juvenile remanded.
District Judge Barney McElholm said that the legislation was 'ludicrous' and needed to be amended to deal with 'multiple and recurring breaches of bail' by juveniles.
He released him on bail again to appear on January 17.
