Tribute has been paid to "tireless" Mobuoy campaigner, Joe Ferguson.

Speaking to Derry Now, Sinn Féin Councillor for the  Faughan ward, Alex Duffy said Mr Ferguson had brought "Mobuoy contamination" to the attention of the public.

Cllr Duffy was commenting following an update on the Mobuoy situation from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs at Derry City and Strabane District Council's Environment and Regeneration monthly meeting.

He said: “I would like to pay my respects to the tireless efforts of the campaigners, particularly the late Joe Ferguson, who fought tirelessly to bring the Mobuoy contamination to the public's attention, Joe passed away in 2016.

“Despite his passing, Joe's legacy lives on through the audio recordings he made during his final hours, which will be featured in a BBC Radio 4 documentary this month. My thoughts and condolences go out to his family during this difficult time.

"It has been nearly a decade since the discovery of the Mobuoy contamination and it remains a pressing issue for many. It is imperative that those responsible take immediate action to rectify this problem and bring closure to affected communities."
