As part of the 51st Bloody Sunday Anniversary organised by the Bloody Sunday Trust, Monica Lozano debuts her first Irish photography exhibition with a selection of new works on display at UV Arts - Urban Art Gallery located at the Garden of Reflection Gallery - 16 Bishops Street, Derry in partnership with the Inner City Trust.
The exhibiton launches on Tuesday, 24th January at 7.00pm and runs until Saturday, 11th February 2023.
Monica Lozano is a Mexican-American photographer born in El Paso, Texas and raised across the border in the sister city of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Lozano received her Master’s Degree in Photography in Madrid, Spain in Escuela Universitaria TAI.In 2020 Lozano's work was published in "Portrait of Humanity" Book by British Journal of Photography and Magnum Photos as well as Witness for World Press Photo.
She finished the Photo Global residency at the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 2011 on a presidential scholarship which she won at the International Talent Support #ITSEIGHT Contest in Trieste, Italy.
Her work has been featured under the “One To Watch” section of American Photo Magazine and the Columbia Journalism Review selected her for the “20 Women to Watch” list. Lozano's elegant and socially charged portraits have won various international photo competitions and grants, including two medals in Le Grand Prix de la Photographie Paris, and her work has been exhibited in 13 Countries.
Lozano is currently documenting the dire conditions of immigrants, displaced, refugees and asylum-seekers housed in shelters and detention facilities in Juarez and El Paso TX and at the same time she is working with the University of Colorado at Boulder and the Crown Institute of Wellness working as an ethnographic photographer for various research projects that seeks to impact directly the students of the latinx community.
The Bloody Sunday Trust wishes to celebrate her work which focuses on these important issues and to share the rich and culturally diverse voice within the city.

UV Arts are currently continuing their takeover of the Garden of Reflection Gallery, in partnership with the Inner City Trust, aiming to create a new and exciting gallery experience for Derry city.
The urban-art focused gallery is hosting a series of alternative art exhibitions by local, national and international artists throughout 2022 and 2023, in addition to UV Arts' ongoing street art and contemporary mural movement across the city and district.
