MacD on Music: Living in the future and none of this has happened yet

MacD on Music: Living in the future and none of this has happened yet

Colin Cronin, The Future Cork Local Band

Music history is filled with artists proclaimed to be the future, from Bruce Springsteen (called Rock and Roll future by future manager Jon Landau), to Lorde (called the future of music by none other than David Bowie, who was such a fan that he died so that she could pay tribute to him at that year’s BRIT Awards), to rapper Future (it’s literally in the name).

This week, I’m talking to another artist that is keeping this fine tradition alive, The Future Cork Local Band - Colin Cronin.

Hailing from Cork, The Future Cork Local Band have had a busy few years since getting a record deal with Tower Records in Dublin. I spoke to Colin Cronin (“The singer, guitarist, songwriter and harmonica player of the group”) about what first inspired him to pursue a career in music, the group’s career highlights to date, and what they’ve got coming up in 2023.

What first made you want to become a musician?

I’ve always had an interest in writing poetry from going back years and an interest in Listening to music from a young age, there was always an old guitar lying around the family home too so I’d pick that up and mess around with it.

I can still remember when they showed Kurt Cobain’s death announcement on the News on the TV way back.

When I was working as a plumber I was always writing poetry during lunch breaks & cigarette breaks. Then when the plumbing finished, I took on music full time.

I attended Cork Academy of Music from 2015-2017, but It’s only the Last 2 or 3 years in recent times since 2020 that have been really busy & exciting, since getting the album deal in Tower Records Dublin and 33RPMCork record store and Records & Relics vintage shop-to our music being available to stream online on Spotify, ITunes, Amazon Music, Deezer, YouTube music and all other streaming platforms.

Some of those albums are titled:

- Live in Europe

- Songs in the Garage

- Welcome to Jack Fordes Bar Live 2022

- 33RPMCORK Record Store Double Live Gig 3rd & 10th June 2022

- Beo Iomlàn

Who would you say have been your main musical influences?

Jeez I’ve got so many influences it’s tough to just pick one, it varies from-Bob Dylan to Oasis to Alanis Morissette to The Cranberries to Neil Young.

I do love a good movie soundtrack also,like-The Lost Boys or Forrest Gump, ya know.

Tell me about some of the highlights of your career to date

One of my highlights to date would have to be playing & recording & streaming live to Instagram fans & supporters online:

For the promotional live gig-33RPMCORK Record Store Double Live Gig 3rd & 10th June 2022 (Remaster)

That’s definitely got to be one of the groups highlights by The Future Cork Local Band

As the Live gig is available on Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Deezer and all streaming platforms also.

Another highlight worth mentioning would be when both the live albums-Songs in the Garage & Live in Europe by The Future Cork Local Band went on sale in stores at Tower Records Dublin

That Definitely called for a bottle of the bubbles

Have you anything coming up you want to talk about?

Yes, in fact we have our first live gig of 2023 coming up shortly.

It’s going to be held in small venue and will be a live acoustic session by The Future Cork Local Band-Colin Cronin

We are planning to hold the live gig session in an old cosy Irish pub

In Cork city called KLM Bar, where the sound will be great to record.

We just need to finalise one or two more things.

And yes! That will be available to purchase at a later date:

On the group’s eBay & Etsy shop:

And on Instagram: @TheFutureCorkLocalBandMerch

Is there anyone else you think we should be keeping an eye on?

Yes There is!

There is a great cover musician who plays live gigs in pubs around the place where I’m from. Their name is Brian Morey

Also there is a great live band called-Bog The Donkey, they’re great too.

The Future Cork Local Band can be found on Instagram @thefuturecorklocalband. Colin Cronin can be found @cronin621.
