Diamond one-way traffic scheme branded "a failure".

The one-way traffic scheme and associated measures in the Diamond have been branded "a failure".

Derry City and Strabane District Ballyarnett councillor, Emmet Doyle (Aontú) described the scheme, introduced as part of the covid Revitalisation Scheme, "one of the most complained about schemes" he had encountered.

Cllr Doyle said: "This scheme has become one of the most complained about schemes I have encountered. The initial plans for this should always have been put out to wide consultation. It has been a failure on all counts and should act as a warning to Council in future - we shouldn’t be grasping every scheme a Stormont Department comes up with.

"I have had complaints from shoppers, workers, business owners and tourists about the impact it has had on travelling through the city centre since its inception.

"Now that a survey has shown widespread dissatisfaction with the scheme, I will only be too happy to raise my support for it to be undone at Environment and Regeneration committee today (Wednesday).

"All we can do now is to work to ensure Road Service put the road scheme back to its original as quickly as possible.”
