A 17-year-old youth has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today charged with stealing clothes from Frasers in Foyleside and breaching a barring order preventing him entering the store.
The youth who cannot be named due to his age appeared charged in connection with an incident on February 17.
The court heard that two youths were seen entering Frasers in Foyleside and try to steal £751 worth of clothing.
They were also said to have caused £402 worth of damage to clothing by trying to remove security tags.
The perpetrators tried to leave but were challenged and then ran off.
CCTV was viewed and the defendant was identified and it was found that he was in breach of a barring order imposed on October 13 last year preventing him entering Foyleside.
Defence counsel Sinead Rogan said that the offences were denied but said she did not think the defendant was a danger to the public.
Deputy District Judge Alan White said that he did believe that the defendant could be a danger to the public as 'substantial damage' had been caused.
He said he had no confidence that further offences would not be committed.
He remanded the youth in custody to appear again on March 7.
