A man who was returned for trial last week in connection with an incident where a police officer was carried on the bonnet of a vehicle has had his bail revoked at Derry Magistrate's Court today.
Adam McMonagle (29) with an address at Hall Lane in London had been returned for trial to the local Crown Court last week charged with causing grievous bodily injury to a police officer on May 2 last.
Today McMonagle appeared charged with breaching his bail by being under the influence of drugs or alcohol and also by being in Derry when he is supposed to reside in London.
The court heard that police were n called to the Springtown Road to a report of a 'distressed male' with no shoes on running in front of vehicles calling for help.
Police found McMonagle but the defendant ignored police saying they were 'fake police'.
McMonagle was then said to have started shouting 'you are trying to overdose me, you are trying to light me on fire.'
A police officer told the court that McMonagle was under the influence of something and 'posed a danger to himself'.
Bail was opposed due to the risk of re-offending with the defendant having 110 previous convictions, the risk of flight and the fact that he had 20 breaches of bail in the past.
Defence counsel Stephen Chapman said that his client had been back in Derry to attend court and had missed his lift to the airport.
He said there was no suggestion of any new offences.
District Judge Barney McElholm said it was 'ridiculous' that McMonagle 'couldn't be bothered to do anything' he was asked to.
He revoked bail and remanded McMonagle in custody to appear again in the Crown Court on March 24.
