Derry Court: Woman (28) remanded on 17 drug related charges

Court heard that the woman had 48 previous convictions - 26 of them for drugs

A 28-year-old woman has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court today charged with 17 drug related charges.

The woman who was granted anonymity due to the general threat existing in the city faced the charges that were said to have occurred on March 3.

She was charged with possessing Diazepam with intent to supply and other charges relating to being concerned in the supply of Pregablin, Diazepam and Xanax.

A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.

He told the court that police observed the defendant walking and approached her and found she was under the influence of some substance.

A search uncovered cannabis, Pregablin and Diazepam and 100 deal bags.

The court heard that two mobile phones were also found while her bail conditions only allow for one.

A further search was undertaken and more Diazepam, Pregablin and Xanax were found.

A strip search was then carried out and more drugs were found in her underwear.

The court heard that it was 25 hours before the defendant was fit to be interviewed and then she refused to speak.

The court heard that the woman had 48 previous convictions - 26 of them for drugs.

Bail was opposed due to the risk of re-offending and also by the fact there was no suitable address.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said his client had only managed to get a bail address recently and now she had lost that.

He said that it could be some time for this case to conclude.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that there was too big a risk of re-offending.

He refused bail and remanded the woman in custody to appear again on March 30.
