Derry Court: Man bailed on condition he does not enter any retail premises

Patton was charged for theft of goods valued at more than £1,000

A man who admitted a series of thefts from various shops in Derry has been bailed at the local Magistrate's Court today on condition that he does not enter any retail outlet.

Jonathan Patton (32) of Ebrington Oaks in Derry appeared charged with stealing cosmetics, alcohol and clothing valued at more than £1,000 on dates between January and December 2022.

Patton pleaded guilty to the offences and a pre-sentence report was requested to be prepared.

A bail application was also made which was opposed by a police officer.

The officer told the court that Patton was bailed to attend a course to treat his alcohol issues but did not turn up on three occasions for the 12 week course.

He said that if bailed police believed Patton would breach his conditions again.

Defence counsel Sean Doherty said his client had attended for the course but had been refused due to substances in his system.

He said that Patton's parents were prepared to move in with him to ensure he adhered to his bail conditions.

Patton was released on bail on condition he observed a curfew, wear a tag and does not enter any retail premises.

District Judge Barney McElholm also said that if for any reason Patton's parents moved out that would constitute a breach of bail.

The case was adjourned until May 5 for the pre-sentence report.
