SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has written to the management of Crescent Link Retail Park regarding parking charges, many issued in error to shoppers, a problem which is having a significant impact on residents.
Mr Durkan has been contacted by a number of constituents in recent weeks seeking assistance with appeals for fines issues by company Smart Parking.
In 2020, the Automatic Number Plate Recognition system erroneously flagged vehicles for overstaying the maximum 4-hours of permitted free parking. Mr Durkan has contacted management to determine if ANPR cameras are experiencing similar issues.
The Foyle MLA commented: “A high number of parking charges at Crescent Link Retail Park have been brought to my attention in recent weeks, mostly by constituents living within the vicinity.
“In a majority of cases, motorists were mistakenly alleged to have spent well over the maximum 4 hours of free parking permitted and subsequently issued with a parking charge.
"From my experience, those most impacted by this problem are residents living in the surrounding areas. Many have explained that they would make multiple short trips per day to shops within the retail park.
"The ANPR system has flagged their vehicles entering the facility in the morning but rather than recording their exit a few minutes later, they’ve been recorded later in the day leaving the premises at a separate visit.
“I would assume the serious fault which impacted the camera system monitoring vehicles entering and existing the retail park a number of years ago, is at play again here.
“I’ve written to the owners of Crescent Link and have asked that the matter is investigated as a matter of urgency.
"I would advise anyone who has been affected not to make any contact with the parking company and to instead contact Consumer Council or my office if they require further assistance.”
