Pupils with sensory issues must be supported at school mealtimes - Durkan

SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has written to both the Education Authority (EA) and Education Permanent Secretary, Mark Browne on behalf of parents with children who have autism or similar conditions and struggle with sensory issues, to ensure their needs are catered for within schools.

It follows concerns from low-income families in receipt of Free School Meals, who have been unable to avail of the provision. The Department for Education has confirmed that any pupil with sensory needs will be supported through the EA’s special diet procedure.

The Foyle MLA said: “Recently, I was contacted by a parent of a child with autism who due to sensory issues, specifically in relation to school food, couldn't avail of their free school meal provision.

“I appreciate that the school menu won't be suitable for some children with sensory issues. I’ve heard some accounts whereby kids have gone home hungry refusing to eat what was on offer at canteen that day. In an attempt to provide suitable packed lunches as an alternative to school meals, low income families are left out of pocket.

“For any child struggling with sensory needs, mealtimes are a battle at the best of times. Eating at school dining halls in a noisy often chaotic environment can be overwhelming for these children the added problem of unsuitable food can prove hugely distressing.”

Mr Durkan continued: “I wrote to both the EA & the Education Permanent Secretary to ask what provision could be made in such circumstances and proposed that a Free School Payment be made in these cases.

“While their policy doesn't currently allow for a cash alternative I’m pleased to receive confirmation that any parents who find themselves in this position can liaise with the school principal & EA Catering service to ensure their child's needs are met at lunchtime; from providing special cutlery to delivering meals to classrooms.

“I would advise anyone who is experiencing problems to contact my office and we’ll do our best to help. I'll continue to push for Free School Meal payments to be provided to low income families over the Easter period as part of the tackling holiday hunger provision made over the last few years.”
