Derry Court: Man fined for disorderly behaviour incident at funeral

Derry Magistrate's Court heard today about an incident at a funeral in the village of Park in County Derry.

Martin Stokes (28) of Cornshell Fields in Derry admitted assaulting police and disorderly behaviour on June 13 2021.

The court heard that police had mounted a high visibility operation at the funeral of a member of the travelling community.

During the funeral a fight broke out between some of the mourners.

Police moved in to restrain the defendant and one officer was struck on the cheek.

Defence counsel Sean Doherty said that members of the deceased person's family were unhappy at the attendance of one person and this led to the incident.

He said his client was 'embarrassed' by what had happened and said Stokes had no history of violence.

Stokes was fined £500.
