Grease is the word, is the word, is the word . . . !!

Derry City and Strabane District Mayor, Councillor Sandra Duffy with producer Martin Mullan at the launch of Grease the Musical.

Back by Popular Demand - The Grove Theatre Group brings an “electrifying” production of the highly popular musical, ‘Grease’, to the Millennium Forum from 31st May – 4th June 2023.

With a highly talented all-local cast, this show promises to be one of the highlights of the year!

It’s the original high-school musical, featuring unforgettable songs from the hit movie including ‘You’re The One That I Want’, ‘Summer Nights’, ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’, ‘There Are Worse Things I Could Do’, ‘Greased Lightnin’ and many more.

The production showcases the talent we have in our wonderful City – producing wonderful singers, dancers and actors. Remember, you don’t have to go to the Westend to get a Westend Performance.

The Grove has been producing musicals, plays and pantomimes since the early 1980’s.

Since then, the Grove has continued to go from strength-to-strength producing large scale musicals each Spring/Summer on the biggest stage in the NW of Ireland. When the group last staged Grease in 2018, such were the queues at the box office, extra dates were added to meet the demand.

This trend looks set to continue with one additional date added to the forthcoming run already!

The group are proud of the record breaking shows they have produced in recent years, with ‘Grease’, ‘Hairspray’, ‘High School Musical’ and “The Wizard of Oz” being amongst the most popular.

This forthcoming production of Grease features local performers, including Laura Brown in the role of Sandy, and Corey O’Connor playing the role of Danny.

The Pink Ladies are played by Joanna Harkin and Laura Kelly as Rizzo; Abby Hagan and Orthlaith McGee as Frenchie; Robyn Whiteside as Marty with Katelin Devine playing the part of Jan.

Some of the cast

Orthlaith McGee is also understudying the role of Sandy and will play the part on Sunday 4 th June.

Danny’s gang of T-Birds are played by James McLaughlin and Cathal Jackson sharing the role of Kenickie; William McFadden as Doody; Daniel Middleton as Roger and Calum Quigg as Sonny.

The part of Patty Simcox is played by Rihanna McGraw, with Leon Cullen playing Eugene. Maria Donnelly and Geraldine Carlin share the part of Cha Cha. Katrina Robinson and Michelle Crawford share the part of Ms Lynch. Reviving his role of Teen Angel, is no stranger to the stage, Felix Healy.

Stephen Carlin returns to the stage as Vince Fountain, sharing the part with another stalwart, Paddy Taylor. We are delighted that Dee Moore once again heads up the prom scene band as Jonny Casino.

Supported by an amazing ensemble of all ages, from across the North-West this show promises to be one of the best in the Grove’s near 45 year history!

The production team includes Roderick Canning as Director; Martin Mullan as Producer; Stephen Carlin as Choreographer; Lana Campbell as Vocal Director; Marty McDevitt as Stage Manager and Thomas Sweeney leading the impressive live band in the pit. The music and vocals are further enhanced by a team of supporting vocalists off-stage.

Grease runs from Wednesday 31st May to Sunday 4th June nightly at 7.30pm. There is also a matinee performance on Saturday 3rd June at 2.30pm.

Schools and groups are also able to book a special morning matinee on Thursday 1st June at 11am.

Tickets can be booked by contacting the box office at Millennium Forum on 71264455.

The group are proud to support ‘The Pink Ladies’ breast cancer charity with this production.

It was with great sadness that Olivia Newton-John, the original ‘Sandy’ sadly passed away after a long battle with cancer last year. The local charity provides immense support to those who suffer with this cancer each year and we are delighted to be able to make a donation to that cause from this production.

Come along and join in the fun with this ever popular musical and ‘throw your mittens around your kittens’ and ‘hand-jive’ the night away with the show that’ll make you want to stand up and shout, ‘A-wop-bop-a-loo-bop A-wop-bam-boom!’
