A preliminary hearing into the death of a Derry man shot by the Real IRA in 2010 has been told that there has been 'concrete progress' in contacts with the Southern authorities as regards information they may have.
Kieran Doherty (31) from Coshowen in Derry was found shot dead on the Brae Hill Road on February 24 2010.
His death was claimed by the dissident republican group the Real IRA who said the dead man was a member of their organisation and they made allegations against him.
At today's hearing counsel for the Coroner, Ian Skelt KC, said that there had been 'significant' contact with the Chief State Solicitor's Office in Dublin as regards any information the Gardai may have in relation to the case.
He said that he had been assured it would take two months to complete their inquiries.
The barrister said that after that it was not yet clear as to how any information uncovered would be transmitted to the Coroner but there had been progress.
The Coroner, Judge Brian Sherrard, said he was grateful for the clarity this information brought to the hearing.
Stephen Toal counsel for the next of kin said that the family welcomed 'the guarantee' from the Southern authorities that it would take two months for their process.
He said 'the long suffering family were very patient' but wanted certainty as to what happened next.
The barrister added that the family were 'grateful' to the Coroner Service for all the efforts in this case.
Mr Skelt suggested that towards the end of the two month period he could ask the State's Solicitor's Office to clearly state what happens after they have gathered their information.
The next hearing will be on June 30.
