Look ahead to Local Government Election 2023 - Faughan Ward

Faughan Ward in-depth focus

The Local Elections on May 18 will see a total of 462 councillors elected to 11 local councils across the North of Ireland.

Forty of those will be elected onto Derry City and Strabane District Council.

Derry City and Strabane District Council comprises seven wards: Ballyarnett, Derg, Faughan, Foyleside, Sperrin, The Moor, and Waterside.

Today we take a closer look at each of the wards.

The overall turnout in Derry City and Strabane District Council electoral area for 2019 Local Government Election was 56.21% with a total of 60,695 valid votes cast. A total of 1,103 ballots were rejected.

Faughan

Faughan comprises the district electoral areas of Claudy, Eglinton, Enagh, Newbuildings and Slievekirk. It has 5 seats.

In 2014, Faughan returned 2 DUP, 2 SDLP and 1 Sinn Féin candidate.In 2019, it returned 2 DUP, 1 SDLP, 1 Sinn Féin, 1 Alliance. Alliance gained a seat from SDLP.

There are ten candidates standing in Faughan. They are: Hayley Canning (SDLP), Alex Duffy (Sinn Féin), Rachael Ferguson (Alliance), Sean Fleming (Sinn Féin), Damian Gallagher (People Before Profit), Ryan McCready (UUP), Julie Middleton (DUP), Declan Norris (SDLP), Graham Warke (Independent) and Gary Wilkinson (DUP).

In 2019, the total number of the Faughan electorate was 13,601. There were  7,143 valid votes cast. There were 103 spoilt votes and the quota was set at 1,191 votes.

The first preference tallies were: Graham Warke (DUP) 1,050 votes (elected); Ryan McCready (DUP) 940 votes (elected); Jim McKeever (SDLP) 565 (elected); Paul Fleming (Sinn Féin) 854 votes (elected); Rachael Ferguson (Alliance) 783 votes (elected); Paul Thomas Hughes (Independent) 733; Brenda Stevenson (SDLP) 693 votes; William Jamieson (UUP) 710 votes; Gus Hastings (SDLP) 491; Conor Heaney (Sinn Féin) 324 votes.

In the Faughan Ward there were two changes during the Council term and a further two changes of affiliation. On October 31 2022, Jim McKeever (Independent) resigned after being expelled from the SDLP and Declan Norris (SDLP) was co-opted as his replacement. On December 19 2022, Paul Fleming (Sinn Féin) resigned and Alex Duffy (Sinn Féin) was co-opted as his replacement.

On June 13 2021, Ryan McCready resigned from the DUP over disagreements with the new party leadership. On July 5 2021, McCready joined the UUP. On June 6 2022, Graham Warke, formerly of the DUP, decided to sit on the Council as an Independent.
