Na Magha welcomed a special guest to the club this week in the form of the Richie McElligott All Ireland trophy, which was won by Derry at Croke Park last Saturday.
The trophy was won by the Derry U20 hurlers, including five Na Magha players: Keelan  Doherty, Ruaidhri McLaughlin, Adam Rankin, Oisin Duddy and Daniel Doherty.
The county team got the better of Roscommon in the U20 B decider, with a score of Derry 3-17 Roscommon 2-14, earning an historic first title for Oak Leaf hurlers at this grade.
Three of the players were able to bring the trophy to Páirc na Magha, so the club could celebrate the county’s success with its own players, their families and their present and former coaches. There was a great buzz about Páirc Na Magha, as future Na Magha stars got pictures with the county players.
Ciaran McCarron was their underage coach, through the age groups. He was proudly pictured with the cup, the players, his brother Mal and their families.
Mothers Sinead McLaughlin and Lynda Doherty also stood proudly with the cup and the players.
Na Magha’s U15 Féile winning camogie team, coached by Ciaran Davidson, Dougie Luffman and Mark Lynch, also celebrated with the Richie McElligot Trophy, as they go on to represent Derry in Ulster.
There were even the classic ‘baby with the cup’ pictures, with county senior stars Alan Grant, with baby Iarla and Breándán Quigley, with baby Nora and grandad Brendan. Plenty of hurleys, helmets and jerseys were signed.
Club Chair person Eamon Harkin said: “It's brilliant that we can create our own heroes at the club and I'm certain that we'll be looking back at these photos as some of these kids line out alongside our All Ireland winners in years to come.”
Na Magha founder members Hugh Breslin and Brendan Quigley lined up with the current players under a portrait of the late Sean Mellon, illustrating the growing legacy of that great clubman, coach, hurler and friend.
