Voting underway in City

Polling stations across the North have opened and voting has begun in the local government elections 2023.

Voters will be electing 462 councillors across the 11 councils in the North, 40 of which will be to Derry City and Strabane District Council.

Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday, and SDLP leader, Colum Eastwood made an early start, casting his ballot at the Model Primary School in the city.

Meanwhile, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Sandra Duffy (Sinn Féin) voted in Lenamore Youth Club.

Voters have been reminded to bring photographic ID to the polling station to enable them to vote.

The elections use the single transferable vote system where voters rank candidates in order of preference.

Counting across 11 sites will begin on Friday morning and is expected to continue into Saturday.
