SDLP Infrastructure Spokesperson Mark H Durkan has called on Translink to enhance the frequency of daily 212 Derry to Belfast Goldiner Express routes to meet growing demand for the service.
The Foyle MLA said: “This route is a hugely popular one, enjoyed by many passengers whether for work or for leisure. However, the lack of direct Derry to Belfast Goldline express bus services has been an issue for quite some time.
“Following the long awaited opening of the A6 dualling scheme from Derry to Dungiven, the response from motorists has been hugely positive, with people lauding the smoother and indeed quicker journey to Belfast.
“That said, one complaint that continues to crop up is from people travelling via the 212 who feel they aren’t getting the benefit of the new shortened journey. At present the 212 route, inclusive of stops between Derry to Belfast, still takes approximately two hours.
“Translink should be making this route easier and more flexible for passengers. Public transport must be promoted and people encouraged to leave their cars at home for the bus. Particularly given its role in the fight back against climate change.
“I’ve liaised with Translink and sought additional express services to Belfast. Pleased that proposals are currently being considered and look forward to seeing some movement on this matter soon.”
