Derry Court: Fine for man who admitted assault and disorderly behaviour

Derry Magistrate's Court heard today how a man who stopped drinking in 2014 started drinking again in December last year and ended up in court.

Kyle Gallagher (31) of Foyle Road in Derry admitted charges of assault and disorderly behaviour on December 20.

The court heard that police were called to the Richmond Centre and found Gallagher being treated by staff for a head injury.

They were told about an incident in the Bentley Bar involving the defendant and spoke to the injured party a member of staff who said he had been struck twice by the defendant leaving him with a bloody nose and swollen eye and CCTV confirmed this.

Gallagher was taken to A&E and then arrested and told police he was 'ashamed' of his actions.

He added he didn't know why he behaved as he did and said he was 'very drunk.'

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that his client had made immediate admissions and expressed remorse.

He said that the defendant had stopped offending and drinking in 2014 and only drank again last year after 8 years 'and this is the consequences'.

Gallagher was fined a total of £300 and ordered to pay £500 in compensation to the injured party.
