Defender Sam Todd has re-joined Derry City on a permanent deal.

The 25-year old Donegal native was in the club’s Academy before being brought into the senior squad in 2017.

He made one senior appearance under Kenny Shiels, against FC Midtjylland in the second leg of the Europa League Qualifer, played at the Sligo Showgrounds in July of that year.

Todd moved to Finn Harps a year later before earning a scholarship at the Dublin University, where he also played for UCD.

Ruaidhri Higgins unveiled his third new signing after landing in the Faroe Islands this morning ahead of tomorrow's Europa Conference clash with HB Torshavn.

Manager Higgins said that he was very happy to bring the new man in, and that he had no doubt Sam would strengthen his side’s defensive options in the latter half of the season.

“We’re delighted to bring Sam back to the club and he has gained really good experience at this level over the last couple of seasons.

“We have quality players in our defence and Sam will definitely add to our options in that area of the pitch, with a busy second half of the season coming up.”

The player himself said he was really looking to getting started but said he knew that competition for places would be fierce.

“I left Derry to try to get more first team football, and funnily enough my only senior appearance first time around was in a Europa qualifier.

“I’ve played with Shane McEleney and Ciaran Coll at Harps and played against Mark Connolly a few times.

“I obviously know Ronan Boyce well and have seen Cameron McJannet and the others like Ben Doherty too; so I know the quality that’s there.

“As well as working with them I’m ready to learn from them too and I can’t wait to get started.”
