Derry Magistrate's Court heard today how a man who was seen on CCTV sniffing a white powder ran from police.
Travis Kee (20) of Hayfield Park in Newbuildings outside Derry admitted a charge of possessing cocaine on May 1 this year.
The court heard that two males were observed in Magazine Street with a bag of white powder.
Police attended and one of the males was detained at the scene but the other male, Kee, ran away from police.
He was stopped in the Guildhall Square and had a bag of white powder believed to be cocaine in his possession.
At interview he made full admissions and said he had bought the drugs from an unknown male in the Waterside for £50.
He told police he knew it was illegal and said he had bought it in 'a moment of weakness'.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that this was 'the height of stupidity'.
He said that Kee has a record but nothing of this nature.
The defendant was fined £250.
