Dungiven man named honorary president of St Canice's GAC

Colm McGuigan (right) is congratulated on being named honorary president of St Canice's GAC, Dungiven, by new club Chairperson, Paddy Mackle.

St Canice's GAC in Dungiven have named local man Colm McGuigan as a honorary president of the club.

Mr McGuigan is a former player and long-term volunteer with the north Derry club.

He was given the prestigious title at last Sunday's AGM for his outstanding service and for being an example of pride within the club.

Colm McGuigan's name is one that is synonymous with Gaelic football in Dungiven.

He played for the club at all levels and was captain of the team that won the 1983 senior championship.

Colm took on the role of club secretary between 1982 and 1984 – at the same time as he was playing, which is unique in itself.

The former fireman of 40 years was also was part of the Derry team that won the Ulster Championship in 1975 and 1976.

After his playing career ended, Mr McGuigan continued to play a vital role within St Canice's GAC, becoming involved in various club committees up until he became Chairperson in 2007, a role he remained in for seven years.

These days Colm is still heavily involved in the club through the lotto committee and running the club shop.

He also looks after the two pitches and has them at such a high standard that O'Cahan Paírc is rated as one of the best pitches in County Derry.
