Man appears in court accused of stealing more than £7,000 worth of men's Gant clothing

Man appears in court accused of stealing more than £7,000 worth of men's Gant clothing from two shops

Some of the clothing was stolen from Moores of Coleraine.

A man has appeared before Limavady Magistrates Court accused of stealing almost £8,000 worth of designer clothing from two different stores.

Gary Cooper, of Glenmore Street in Belfast, appeared via videolink before Wednesday's sitting of the court.

He is accused of five thefts dating between August 10 2022 and September 1 2023.

On five different occasions, Cooper is alleged to have stolen men's Gant clothing from The White House in Portrush and Moores of Coleraine, which are both owned by the same company.

An investigating officer told the court hearing that CCTV footage from The White House showed a man lifting clothes off the rails and placing them in a black bag before moving to blind spots in the store.

The theft was not discovered until staff noticed a fire exit door was left open and the stock was missing.

The man came back to the store several more times and also stole from the Coleraine store.

Police identified the man in the CCTV footage as 56 year-old Cooper.

Following his arrest, he made a 'no comment' interview, the court heard.

An investigating officer told the court that police were seeking a remand in custody due to fears Cooper would re-offend if he was released.

The officer stated that Cooper has 141 previous convictions, the majority of which are for dishonesty offences.

Jonathan Browne, barrister for Cooper, stated that some of the CCTV footage 'is not of great quality'.

“It's clearly an identification case,” he added.

District Judge Peter King told Cooper he would release him on bail of £500 provided he adhere to a number of conditions.

Cooper must reside at an address in Belfast and is not allowed to have contact with the injured party or any witnesses in the case.

He is also banned from entering the Causeway Coast and Glens area and has to report to police when required to do so.

Judge King warned Cooper that he would be imprisoned immediately if there was 'any whiff' of him being near the Causeway Coast and Glens area.

The case was adjourned until February 5.
