Funeral of Derry road traffic collision victim to take place on Monday

The funeral of a Derry man, who passed away on Wednesday following a weekend road traffic collision, is to take place on Monday.

The collision, involving a pedestrian and black Volkswagen Golf, occurred on the Strand Road in the early hours of Sunday morning.

James (Jamesie) Gallagher, aged 42, was from the Galliagh area of the city.

James was the loving father of Darragh. Beloved son of Mary and James (Fernabbey Drive) and dear brother of Marty, brother-in-law of Lorraine and much loved uncle of Eabha Lily and Caoimhe.

Jamesie's remains will be reposing in his home, 53A Glenabbey Crescent, BT48 8SZ, from 12noon on Saturday.

He will be removed from there on Sunday at 6.30pm to St Patrick’s Church, Pennyburn for Requiem Mass on Monday at 12.30pm.

Burial will take place immediately afterwards in the City Cemetery.

Detective Sergeant Arkins of the Collision Investigation Unit said: “Colleagues from other emergency services attended, but sadly Mr Gallagher passed away in hospital.

“Our enquiries are ongoing, and we are appealing to anyone who was travelling in the area at the time of the collision, or who has any CCTV, dash cam or mobile phone footage that could assist with our investigation, to contact us on 101 quoting reference number 185 of 11/02/24.”
