A Sinn Fein councillor was remembered on Sunday by family, friends and comrades at a special commemorative event to mark the 35th anniversary of his assassination in County Derry.

John Davey, who served on Magherafelt District Council, was described at the republican commemoration held on Sunday morning in pleasant sunshine, at his graveside in St. Mary’s Churchyard, Lavey, as a “giant of a man”.

The guest speaker was Sinn Féin National Chairperson and South Antrim MLA, Declan Kearney who paid tribute to John Davey’s immense contribution to republican politics, across counties Derry and Antrim, which he said cannot be underestimated. Remembering John as a republican leader, Declan Kearney celebrated his huge contribution to the aim of Irish unity and independence.

Sunday’s commemoration was organised by the Fergal O’Hanlon/John Davey Sinn Féin Cumann, Lavey and chaired by local councillor, Sean McPeake. South Derry Martyrs Flute Band participated in the commemoration.
